About DJFT
The Department of Jute and Fibre Technology is a technological department of the University of Calcutta, located at the Ballygunge Science College Campus in Kolkata, West Bengal. Its predecessor, the Institute of Jute Technology, was established in 1951, and the institute was converted into a postgraduate technology department of the university in 2011. The department focuses on education, research, and technical development in jute, allied fibres, textile technology, and technical textiles. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate engineering programmes and industry-oriented training in jute technology and management.
The Institute of Jute Technology was set up jointly by the University of Calcutta and the Indian Jute Mills Association. It was inaugurated by Chief Minister Dr. B.C. Roy on 10 March 1951. It began as an affiliated college of the university and became a postgraduate technology department of the University of Calcutta from 1 July 2011. It offers B.Tech and postgraduate programmes in jute and fibre technology.
